Why Algebra Is Vital for Teens' Intellectual and Emotional Growth
Recently, a friend from elementary school posted on Facebook, “Why did I need to take a year of trigonometry?” Most of his Facebook friends concurred that it was time poorly spent. Always an outlier, I replied that I hated math as a teen. But now I'm an algebra tutor, SAT coach and college counselor. The latter work shows me that Cornell would not have accepted my friend had he not taken trig. (In fact, 94% of Cornell freshmen have taken calculus, as I explain in this video about choosing the right courses in middle and high schools.) Additionally, I opined that he wouldn’t have succeeded in law school without the logic that trig demands.
Many students feel the same way about algebra. But as an algebra tutor who hated all high school math, I believe that algebra is more than just a set of formulas.
